Example 1
This image is from the modern adaptation of the British film Oliver. The character in the photo is the protagonist of the film, Oliver Twist. Oliver's character is established as a poor orphan who lives in Miscellany in the 19th century which can be further reflected through the costume director's choice of clothes. Oliver wears a misbuttoned waist coat that seems to be too small under an oversized jacket that has been rolled up at the sleeves. The costume director has chosen to use neutral colours such as black and grey, most likely to reflect the lack of hope and dullness of the 9 year old child who is forced to live in a substandard orphanage, therefore foreshadowing what his future is to seem like. The make up department have also used darker shades to give Oliver the look of a dirty, dishevelled and underprivileged boy.
Example 2
This is an image of Kenneth from the 2011 film Anuvahood. Kenneth is suppose to represent a stereotypical 'road man' of 21st century London. The costume designers have reflected this through their choice of clothing: a baseball hat (also known as a snapback), hoodie and a one shouldered drawstring bag. These are the most common things we think of when we hear 'London teenagers' so the costume does fit the stereotype. The character in the image does not appear to have any predominant make up applied to his face however if you look closely at his eyebrows you can see that there are slits in them which is another common thing amongst teenage boys in London.
Example 3This last image is from the popular 1984 movie 'Revenge of the Nerds'. The character shown in this image is Gilbert Lowell and he is portraying the typical 'geek/nerd'. This has been achieved through the costume designer's choice of clothing. Gilbert wears a professional shirt and trousers which is something that is not common for teenagers. He also has a pair of oval rimmed glasses which we still associate with the 'geek/nerd' in films today. In terms of props Gilbert has a set of pens and a magazine that seems too advance for his age group thus keeping him alienated from them. From the costume and props it is clear that the costume directors were trying to represent a stereotypical 'geek/nerd' and were ultimately effective seeming as we still use certain aspects in our current films.
Task 2This is Aliyah Walker. She is 20 years old and has just been accepted into the Journalism Jungle (a well respected Journalist company) as an intern. At the age of 9, Aliyah lost her parents when they went on holiday to Oklahoma and mysteriously disappeared on their drive back. She then began to live with her grandparents Katherine and Nathan Walker in New Haven until she turned 18 and got accepted into Yale University. Aliyah has designated her life to researching and developing mysterious stories in hope of one day being able to uncover the true story of her parents' disappearance. When Aliyah meets Troy Andrews, a puzzling yet handsome graduate, she struggles to keep her personal and professional life separated. And as Aliyah continues her internship at Journalism Jungle she stumbles onto a conspiracy that may not only lead her to the truth about her parents but also about similar cases. But who can she trust?
The opening title sequence of this film will start with Aliyah getting ready in her Yale dorm. Then we will be introduced to the other characters through pictures in her room. Whilst all of this goes on there will also be a voice-over of Aliyah's character speaking about her past.
The character of Aliyah Walker represents the working class young adults category. She is primarily a hero in this film however there are certain times where her judgement on justice is swayed by those around her. Aliyah is also quite a savvy, well assured and confident character but throughout the film there will be emotional moments that reinforce her age and how vulnerable she is in the 'Big Bad World'.
Task 3
My group and I have decided to created a crime/thriller based title sequence and here is an image of a few props I found in my house that we could potentially use whilst filming.
Hoodie and baseball hat - Since most crime films have a 'bad guy' or 'villain' I thought we could present them with a hoodie and baseball cap as this is what audiences usually associate with that specific character.
Blazer - Similarly to the criminal's costume, I thought that a blazer would suit the character of a investigator or detective as it is something that is commonly associated with them. It also portrays the high status of the character and lets the audience know that this character is of a certain superiority.
Red Cup - As in many crime and thriller films, there is a party where something goes wrong and the police gets involved.
Heart Cushion - I think this prop could be a representation of a possible love interest for our protagonist. It could also be used as a metaphorical symbol that our protagonist has to show the loss of a loved one.
Sunglasses - These sunglasses could be used as a disguise for a character in our title sequence who is in the witness protection or a suspect.
Lighter - The lighter could be used for a possible incident at a party or to represent a character smoking.
